CABKOT – FIRE RESISTANT COATING
FOR ELECTRICAL CABLES
You are fully aware about the
consequences of fire in industries in general and cables
in particular. Electrical cables are insulated with
Polyvinyl Chloride which contributes to a rapid spread
of fire. During intense fire it gives off toxic fumes
combustion and corrosive gases. 1 kg of soft PVC with
35% Chloride content when involved in fire, emits 360
gms of Hydrogen Chloride gas, which is when dissolved in
water vapours, results in 1 ltrs of smoking Hydrochloric
acid. The propagation of fire in PVC cables is as fast
as 20 mtrs per minutes. Indian Standard has recommended
a certain code of safety vide IS 12459 Of 1988, which
requires the cables to be compartmentalized by sealing
walls / floor openings / openings under control panels
and creating compartments along the cable galleries by
using suitable fire resistant compound such as CABKOT.
The cable coating compound CABKOT, developed by
AROMA, is a water based Fire Resistant Compound for
coating on electric cables to withstand severe fire and
to prevent propagation along horizontal and vertical
cable racks under intense fire conditions. |
| Some of the
silent features of CABKOT are stated below : |
1 |
CABKOT stops propagation of fire along horizontal and
vertical directions for a period
exceeding 3 hours. |
2 |
CABKOT protects cables from damages
due to internal short circuit fires and keeps
them functional for 20 minutes
even during intense fire conditions. |
3 |
CABKKOT does
not affect the current carrying capacity of the cables. |
| 4 |
CABKOT is mechanically tough and can withstand
sufficient load such as foot traffic. |
5 |
CABKOT is a
non hygroscopic compound which is water, acid and alkali
resistant. |
|
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE OF CABKOT
|
( A ) GENERAL |
|
The concept of fire protection of cables is based on
the following basic recommendations as per IS 12459 of
1988. |
| 1 |
Preventing / Delaying fire damage to the cables to
preserve their functioning and increasing their resistance to fire / heat. |
| 2 |
Preventing / Retarding the flame propagation
through cables runs. |
| 3 |
Segregating cable runs into compartments with a
view to localizing the fire.
|
( B ) CABLE COATING
1 |
Cable under
Control Panels : |
Cable to length of app. 1.5 – 2
mtrs, should be coated with CABKOT. This will
effectively prevent flame propagation between the panel
and the other areas, thus providing protection to the
panel from fire Hazards. |
2 |
Cable affected by coal
and deposition : |
This is highly hazardous area. Entire
length of the cable, particularly heavy bunches of the
cables should be coated with CABKOT. If the coal dust
catches fire CABKOT will prevent any damage to the cable
for a considerable period. |
3 |
Cable in high temperature
areas : |
It is recommended that the cables
near Boilers where the temperature constantly remains
above 50
deg; C.and are prone to Flame Licking, should be coated
entirely with CABKOT. |
4 |
Cable Joints : |
The area of approximately 1 Mtr. On
both the sides of the joint and the joint itself should
be coated with CABKOT to prevent the propagation of fire
and damage to adjoining cable. |
5 |
Cable Galleries: |
Cables should be coated with CABKOT
on the periphery of the bunch of cables. The
compartments should be created by coating app. 1.5 Mt.
At a length of app. 10 – 20 Mrs. |
6 |
Battery Room Area: |
Cables coated with CABKOT will be
protected both from fire and chemical action of the
battery fluid. |
7 |
Cable Crossing : |
Where cables cross each other in the
cable gallery, the area should be protected by applying
CABKOT at a length exceeding 1.5 Mrs. |
8 |
Oil / Lubricant Spillage: |
The entire length of cable likely to
be affected by fire / Lubricant Spillage should be
coated with CABKOT. The fire affecting the fuel will
normally burn out while CABKOT will provide protection
to the cables for a considerable time. |
